I was an intestinal histologist and when we looked For the edema in GERD we found an improvement after the therapy. We never thought it could be the primary cause of the pathology. However, the question is quite interesting, in the light of the new field interlevel-intralevel cellular dynamical alterations.
We demonstrated in 2004 (Am J Gastroenterol) that omeprazole may induce the ultrastructural healing of mucosal damage both in erosive esophagitis and in NERD. We do not know whether this event affects the natural history of the disease. DIS is a marker of damage above the NERD patients.
