Evolutionary theory does not support the idea that modern humans evolved directly from chimpanzees. Humans, chimpanzees, and bonobos each followed separate evolutionary trajectories. However, tracing their lineages far enough into the past reveals a convergence at a shared ancestral point—known as the most recent common ancestor. Traits common to humans and other members of the Homininae subfamily were inherited from this ancestor and subsequently passed down to their respective lineages. As such, the notion that modern humans (Homo sapiens) emerged from chimpanzees in a single evolutionary event is a misconception.

:-) Not very much: Darwin was correct, of course, in saying that we are primates closely relatied to chimps+bonobos, but he thought we came from Africa. The "out-of-Africa" slogan is wrong: humans - like orangutans, gibbons & other Asian mammals - have no Pliocene African retroviral DNA that is present in chimps, gorillas & other African mammals. In fact, australopiths in Africa are more closely related to gorillas or else to chimps than to us: Pliocene Homo 5-2 mill.yrs ago lived along S-Asian coasts+rivers, e.g. early-Pleistocene H.erectus on Java. Between our species, there are many similarities, mutual care, cultural transmission, hierarchical sociality, but we have developed and adapted in different ecosystems, where each of our species will have different destinies
