Dear Researchers,
I'am estimating the age of Carassius gibelio individuals by counting the scale rings. However I found it difficult to estimate the age of young individuals (less than 15 cm). Are otoliths more accurate? I am asking this becouse I could not find any articles using otoliths in astimation of the age of C. gibelio.

May be its difficult to me to count annuli because scales do not have them (untill fish reachs 15sm).

my understanding, otoliths are generally more reliable, scales tend to underestimate fish age, especially in older fish (5yrs and older)

Despite that in every research (that I have downloaded for free from Google Scholar) authors use the scales for estimating C. gibelios age, I have to check otoliths olso. I want to compare if they display the same number of annual rings.

Our lab. is working on precise age estimation in freshwater fishes, otoliths provide precise age estimates when compared to other structures such as scales, opercular bones, vertebrae in general and more so in case of older individuals.
