Please, anyone explain what does Nōmen est ōmen mean?
It was mentioned in Plauto's composition El Persa. Slave is telling his owner "Nōmen est ōmen" to buy a new slave which is expensive, and whose name means "profit".
It means something like "the name is the destiny". The new slave's name means "profit", so he will be profitable to his owner, despite the expensive price. He will be worth the price, a good investment.
We wouldn't know why the slave is trying to convince his owner. Maybe he knows the new slave, is related to him, or has a liking for him.
