I believe child labor happens because the adult wages are not enough to cover the consuming expenses of the household plus the expenses required for children's schooling. What is your Idea?
Child labor is a multifaceted phenomenon. There are several reason compelling a child to enter into market for as a laborer.
Seemingly it is the low adult wage or less than needed parents income resulting into child labor, but the fact is different. In a study of 200 households (100 practicing child labor and 100 not practicing it), it was revealed that those not practicing child labour was not because their income was enough, but because one or more of the adults in the household had a certain level of education, or was employed in a Govt. on private organization. In the other group, both of these factors were missing in the families practicing child labor. Thus it was awareness of the families influencing their decision to send or not to send children to earn.
Furthermore there are demand and supply side of the problem. If there would be demand, there would be supply.
Higher adult wage is one of the crucial factor but not sufficient to minimize child labour. In addition to higher wages, the enforcement of compulsory schooling for children, incentives for formal schooling, campaigns against the use of child labour and high degree of awareness among the working parents will be necessary in my view.
