I am from Canada, and this is never done in my country. I am currently doing research in France, and this practice is very common. It is partly for style and ornamental reasons, with many trees 'espaliered' into fancy shapes. But also partly to manage tree size, and keep them from getting too big. It does not work with all trees! Some trees don't mind pruning at all.

Occurs occasionally in the United States by both private individuals and government authorities (the latter of which will sometimes really butcher a tree to remove limbs in close proximity to telephone and power lines). Only law that regulates tree trimming is property law. A property owner can do whatever they want with trees on their own property including the major trimming you are asking about, and they can (carefully) trim any branches from trees on neighboring properties that overhang their property. In the three states that I have lived in I am unaware of any law that would limit the governments power to do whatever they want to trees on public property.

I wish these are the reasons. : ) We always do these as people want to see their cars parked in the streets and to see the people hanging around. They also think that trees bring birds and these animals dirty their balconies. And the local authorities cut these trees for maintaining free wood as an aid to religious groups education centers and mosques.

I agree with you! In modern times, people only think about financial profit. And do not think about future generations.
