I think that this thesis called "Morphological Development of the Axial Skeletons of Esox Lucius and Esox Masquinongy (Euteleostei: Esociforms), with Comparisons in Developmental and Mineralization Rates" may be of your interest
You are asking for information on measurements of bones in Esox. There are many papers dealing with meristics and morphometrics of many teleosts in the literature, but I have never seen a publication dedicated exclusively to bones’ measurements in Esox or any other teleost. Some times you may find comparative measurements of two or a few more bones that are being used as diagnostic characters or characters used in phylogenetic analyses. More often you find such kind of comparisons in studies of bones in fossil fishes. Thus, if you are interested in this kind of information, you will have to take the measurements yourself. The thesis recommended to you by Alexander has descriptions of different bones, especially of their first appearance in early ontogeny and of the sequence of their appearance. This tells you that if you want to proceed with your study of bone’ measurements in species of Esox, you should be sure that you are studying skeletons belonging to adult individuals and comparable ages, if it is possible.
I am really honored that you took the time to answer my question. Indeed, I started collecting and preparing myself some Recent Esox bones but I am still short on the numbers. Thank you for your kindness
You are most welcome, especially because you are a young researcher.
I forgot to mention that you should look a paper by Burdi and Grande titled "Morphological development of the axial skeleton of Esox lucius and Esox masquinongy (Euteleostei: Esociformes), with comparisons in developmental and mineralization rates" published as a chapter in Origin an Phylogenetic Interrelationships of Teleost. You could contact Terry Grande in RG and ask for a private copy of this paper (it has all copyright reserved).
Dear Nicolae! You can use the monograph of E.K. Sytchevskaya (1976). The fossil esocid fishes of the USSR and Mongolia. I'm sure, that this work helps you.
With best wishes, Oleksandr
P.S. The file attached is in somewhat strange format. You may download this reader there: http://windjview.sourceforge.net/
Dear Nicolae! You're welcome! I agree that Russian is not easy, but there are a lot of useful measurements of Esox in this monograph. If you will need some help with translation - please do not hesitate to let me know.
You have received already three possible sources concerning some measurements on specimens of Esox. This has been an interesting exchange, with nice results, because some of the theses that you got are not easy to locate. Eugenia's paper is both difficult to be found and difficult to read because of the language, but you have already got an offer about its translation. However, I suggest that you keep in mind that there are personal differences in how we measure, how we use the caliper (or other instruments) so that it is always a good idea that comparable measurements in one study be taken by only one person. Despite the important help with publications that you have received already, still you will have to get your own measurements/ratios, etc... and compare them with the values given by others. I would be very interested to know what your results will be.
Thank you, Mr. Oppliger! Your thesis is very interesting and gives me the opportunity to check certain results. Thank you for the opportunity to read it
