Hi everyone,
I just wonder if anyone using Zoe Fluorescent Cell Imaging System (from Bio-Rad). It seems very nice as it can assess cells with fluorescent tag in both flasks and slides. But what I can not be sure whether its touchscreen has long-life. I mean there will be some postgrad students working with this system so that operating can not be controlled by supervisor or any professional.
Touchscreens are fine in the mobile phones with almost no problem, but this system is open to many people working in the lab.
If any advise, would be happy

Yes it is great system, hoewever with any equipment shared there is a risk of someone not using it properly. Giving training sessions to the future users and explaining how to properly use and look after the equipment should help. You should get a plastic protector cover, put a sign asking everyone to be gentle with the touch screen. Also you should make users to book the equipment and fill in a time sheet prior to use so that there is at least a record of who is using it. If something goes wrong you will have an idea about the person. Another thing to consider is not to allow food and drink (especially Turkish tea "cay" in Karadeniz) in the room where the equipment is placed.

Thank you very much for your reply. This is good advise. I will have my strict regulations how to use this around this microscope. But çay is irresistable :) Are you Turkish? :) I did my PhD in Sydney Uni, so we can be sort of double hemşeri :) I have been to Brisbane which is the great place. If I live in Australia anymore, this would be my second choice to live after Sydney :)
So you use this cell imaging system for what purpose? I am about to buy it. I just want to see my triple staining of fixed fibroblasts. My worry is that these kind of compact systems can not be modified as conventional microscopes, for instance it has only one objective x20, the extra magnificance is only provided by digital zoom which is around 2 fold something. I normally use 40x and 100x UV objectives. This digital zoom can make me happy with clear images that are publishable?

You are welcome. Yes I am Turkish, from Kirklareli/Thrace. Yes I love drinking cay too and always make my own at home with a tea pot that I brough from motherland. Sydney and Sydney Uni are great. I worked in Sydney one year at UNSW, before I moved to Brissy. Oh great yes you are certainly a double hemseri:-) Brisbane is great, clean and not too busy, and there is no winter:-) Let me know if and when you come.
I used to use about 6-7 years ago for quick visualization or to find dye-filled neurons among many others. This would help me decide whether the cell was worth spending time in confocal microscope. I agree with you that the objective and zoom limitation is an important issue. I guess with fibrocytes you do not really need high magnification, and 20x objective with 2x optical zoom should be enough for simple triple labelling. However, with smaller cell types with complex morphology, or if you wanted to study organelles this will not be sufficient. With neurons, if they are good fills, to identify small spines I need to use 100x objective with 2.5 to 10x optical zoom at small steps (intervals) of ~0.3 micron.
What aspects of fibrocytes are you studying? Are they human fibrocytes?

I actually do not use confocal at this stage. May be in the future. It needs a high level of professional operation which I do not have. The Bio-Rad one will be the main microscope for the project I am working on its proposal now.
My triple staining will include mitochondrial dye, e.g. MitoTracker. Hoechst as well and an epitope localised in DNA. Mitochondria is very small to see staining in detail but, image processing software, I guess, is able to access any color intensity. I am planning to work with human fibroblast and muscle cells plus their cancerous formation.
I will have a conventional epifluorescence micrsocope in the future, at least try to buy it. Biorad one will be then mostly used for live cell imaging in the culture lab.

Hey, we're looking at buying one of these. Does anyone use them to count cells in a haemocytometer? I don't really want to spend $4000 on a stand alone cell counter. Thanks in advance
