For PL spectroscopy, it is defined as two, termed as PL Emission spec and PL Exitation spec. The former is the emission detected against wavelength when the material is excitated at one excitation wavelength, whilst the latter is scanning excitation wavelength when emission is detected at one specific emission wavelength.

Number of peaks and each wavelength position are determined by the energy structure of your materials.
