Hello everyone,

I am hoping to start a discussion regarding this issue, so that I can gauge the standard opinion and experiences people in my situation are having - please share your experiences and issues.

I have been using Genemapper v5 to analyse SSR .fsa files happily for about 4 years. Microsoft have announced recently that they will stop supporting Window 7 in 2020, subsequently my university is upgrading their whole IT system to Windows 10. Genemapper v5 is designed to work on Windows 7 (and other older Windows systems). Thermofisher Scientific (The now owners of Life Technologies and Applied Biosystems - see Wikipedia for the whole story) have now released Genemapper v6 which is compatible with Windows 10. The problem is that this "upgrade" will cost a lot of money, I have a quote for about £9500 inc. VAT to retain the current state of capability I currently have. As far I can see this is just an compatibility fix and not an upgrade with extra features, so this feels a bit steep to me.

As we don't have a Capillary Electrophoresis machine here at the university we have the full software installed on a virtual server machine and then 5 client versions of the software which link into the virtual server over our network. This virtual server is running Windows 7 currently (but will be upgraded), however the machines linking in are now running Windows 10.

We thought it best to try and see if this work - and it does! Until today that is. I have started to get error messages (see attached) which have stopped progress with my work currently.

I'm in touch with my IT experts at the University (who are working on things (slowly)), but I am just asking you if you've tried something similar and been OK or have come across problems?

Please let me know - I haven't found a place on the internet where people are discussing issues like this - but if you know of somewhere more appropriate let me know also.

Many thanks in anticipation.
