Because African writing systems and academia were destroyed long before colonization, the British believed, upon their arrival, that our average IQ was too low to grasp the complexities of the English language. As a result, they taught us to read English words exactly as they are spelled, leading to poor phonetics. The African accent in English is, therefore, a Western construct. Do not rely on it to assert your Africanness, but rather on AFRICAN languages. Learn the correct pronunciation in English just as in every language you study.
