Each country would be different. In general, in countries where the academic system is state, there are different degrees of nepotism. It is a problem that is always present, and against which you have to fight to prevent its progress and permanence
Nepotism is biggest barrier in country development. Now a days nepotism is not only thriving in government sector but also in private sector as well. Nation has just started its journey of development, many of citizens are first person in their entire generation who have got the education. Many of us are first in our family who is trying to make space in outer world by getting some opportunities for prosperity to break the vicious cycle of deprivation which our ancestors had to face throughout their life. But it is very frustrating for deserving person when he has to suffer from discrimination because of prevailing nepotism in every sphere of life. Before getting into corporate world I had the preception that nepotism happens only in government departments but after seeing this in corporates, my hopes have been shattered.
The phenomenon of nepotism is a global phenomenon that most political (democratic, and authoritarian) regimes know together. Both in the North and in the South, and this is clearly observed in the field of academic education. Developing countries are characterized by this phenomenon as a distinct case compared to developed countries.
Nepotism in the academic system is becoming more pronounced, and beneficiaries are taking greater advantage knowing fully well that the trend has become established. It's either you're family with the boss, or his church member, or his "gossip apparatus"
It's big NO. It will persist as long as we human beings exist. It is in the blood and is hard to change also. Not only in academics, it is present in every department.
