Many institutions aspire to be autonomous and more colleges in the state are applying for the status to have more say in the choice of curriculum, examination patterns and assessment as well as to introduce skill development and placement courses that can give their students the edge in the job market.

Academic institutions are disseminators/creators of knowledge to guide society as to what to do and in which direction to move for better and longer. In order that to happen their freedom without doubt is vitally essential. An academic institution that has no freedom is a controlled vehicle which has to go only to predetermined places via predetermined paths by short sighted powerfuls.
To enable colleges to award degrees on behalf of the university by providing more academic and operative freedom to function better with credibility. The Parent University will award degree to the students evaluated and recommended by the autonomous college. The degree certificates will be in a common format devised by the University. The name of the college will be mentioned in the degree certificates. Autonomous colleges that have completed three terms can confer the degree under their title, with the seal of the university.

Dear @Subash, academic autonomy suppose no politics, no nepotism. I am sorry for the situation in your country where caste employment at the University is present which may influence the quality of education. In my country there are many problems which are related to political interference in higher education, which is against the law!

NIZAM COLLEGE (Established in 1887) - Osmania University, Hyderabad
Nizam College has produced many a sportsmen and women of international repute. The College was granted autonomy by the university facilitating the development of need-based courses and curricula. The College has its own health centre and hostel. The library of the College is one of the oldest and has a collection of many rare old books, in addition to the latest editions and journals. Academic freedom is asymptotic like quarks, free within limits, but not autonomous. Accountability is always there in some form. People forget.
Someone has to pay for the academics. It makes a control system that some times is good, other times bad.
Always we find in some places the money has falsified the academic content. Competition for students brings motivation to remain credible. Struggle for autonomy increases the cost for students, tending to excess.
Academic autonomy would allow the university to maintain quality in recruitment, admissions, teaching, research and promotion standards without any political and/or other external influences.
It's scary demerit may be the abuse of power by the top level administrative body, some of whom often charge exorbitant student user fees and engage in other managerial follies. Thus, I advice that a room of flexibility in operations, especially those related to real academic issues stated above be granted to universities. However, the modalities in administration must have an external monitoring body.
