It depends what you mean here? 'General' literature reviews (systematic, integrative) etc are not usually classed as qualitative, nor quantitative, not mixed methods. They are merely, if intended for the purpose, an initial stage of the research process for developing research questions and statements. The only exceptions are 'concept analysis' and discourse analysis'. They are qualitative approaches - but use secondary data (i.e. the existing literature) rather than primary data. A systematic review/meta-analysis also uses secondary data (i.e. existing experimental study findings) and is quantitative.
From my point of view, a literature review is linked with your research topic and your research questions. In contrast, in the methodology chapter you will explain how you want conduct your research (qualitative, quantitative or mixed-method).
I agree with Dean Whitehead that a systematic literature review is not qualitative, quantitative, or mixed. For a mixed methods review, you would separate the quantitative and qualitative articles, and perform something like a meta-analysis of the effects across the quantitative articles.
SLR takes both methods. As the name implies, it's systematic. Categorize all documentations belonging to each method and sectionalize your analysis accordingly. Preferably, 'theorecism' before empiricism. The nature of research is immaterial.
Hi! Have a look at this paper: it should help: Massaro, M., Dumay, J., & Guthrie, J. (2016). On the shoulders of giants: undertaking a structured literature review in accounting. Accounting, Auditing & Accountability Journal.
Praveen, literature reviews serve a purpose, which is linked to what it is that you wish to achieve by conducting it. Studies that are qualitatively orientated tend to have literature reviews of similar ilk and so goes for quantitative and mixed methods studies. It is important to be clear from the very beginning what the theoretical frame is and what is is meant to achieve. Interesting stuff.
If the review should move beyond a mere counting of what has been done before by how many publications, I suggest having a look into this paper that elaborates for approaches for the application of theory in literature reviews:Article The application of theory in literature reviews – illustrate...
