Dear researchers, We use a reference standard to evaluate the theoretical biomethane potential but found that in various other sources (articles), the Buswell equation is presented differently from what is indicated in the standard. However, we discovered that the equation in the standard is stoichiometrically wrong (for both CH4 and CO2 reaction products). Can anyone confirm this supposition? Figure 1 shows the Buswell equation of the VDI 4630 standard. Figures 2 and 3 indicate the stoichiometrically correct equation, presented in the articles.

You know very well what is presented in the scientific documentation, that biogas and biomass technologies are considered CO2 neutral, since the CO2 released during combustion of biogas/biomass is regarded the same CO2 assimilated by plants during photosynthesis. That’s what we have been taught in schools but I find this justification very logical, totally credible. We cannot say the same about CO2 released during waste incineration, for instance. Also, we have been taught that CH4's contribution to global warming is 24 times more pronounced than of CO2, you probably do not agree with this just as you do not agree with the fact that CFCs contribute to greenhouse effect and global warming (according to one of your answers). I respect and appreciate your opinion very much but if all these statements are a myth, I do not understand how they are so much promoted and underpin high-level policies.

Indeed, your answer referred to the ozone layer depletion, the two effects are connected. However, I am convinced that detailed analyses and debates (including contradictory ones) have been carried out before drafting environmental policies, legislation, standards, programmes for research and innovation, school lectures etc. Best regards.
