Palmoplanter hyperhidrosis is very difficult to treat by drugs. Surgery has devastating complications. Iontophoresis with a maintenance schedule is a good therapeutic option. As a mechanism of action some believes in 'Electric gradient theory' and some believes in 'Plug theory'. Both are debatable. What could be the mechanism by which iontophoresis actually reduces sweating?

Although its mechanism of action is still not entirely understood, there are several theories, including the plugging of sweat glands as a result of ion deposition, blocking of sympathetic nerve transmission, or a decrease in pH as a result of the accumulation of hydrogen ions.
