I have a query. We find intensity ratio for atomic % for those element where multiple oxidation states exists and also in theory too, intensity ratio rule exist for same/different n but different L value. Do they follow the same pattern if say for e.g. we have Ca 2p1/2 and 2P3/2, does the intensity ratio matters there, as Ca exist in +2 oxidation state?
For Ca(+2), the intensity or area ratio of the peaks is ~ 1:2 (2p1/2, 2p3/2). The ratio will be the same irrespective of oxidation state whether Ca(0) or Ca(+2). However, if the sample contains more than one oxidation state, for e.g., Ca(0) and Ca(+2) together, the area ratio may slightly vary if you do deconvolution.
Integrated intensity of both 2P1/2 (around 347 eV) and 2p3/2 (around 351 eV) of Ca will be +2 state with the separation energy of 3.5 eV. For Ca(0), 2p1/1 will be below 346 eV.
The branching ratio is almost the same regardless of the oxidation state. During peak-fitting analysis, this ratio should be fixed to that from the Scofield tables (Journal of Electron Spectroscopy and Related Phenomena, 8 (1976) 129-l 37), which is 0.513 for excitation with 1487 eV light.
