I mean tribal in the widest sense, that is through shared betavioural traits, those who look and behave like us, leading to the forming of groups. America's often disastrous foreign policy has tended to ignore other countries' tribal politics. In the West we ignore our own, believing we are above all that. In fact we rarely recognise our own tribal allegiences and behaviour.

Who you work with.
Are there shared behaviour traits, similarities in dress, similarities in looks.
I believe it is through these tribal or group connections they people become successful, not through individual characteristics. Allign yourself with a successful group, and you will become successful.
One's opinion IS originated from his or her cultural identities of: childhood at home; then after, from schools & related schools and the surrounding communities , from younger-adulthood to the solid senior ages. Pushing ourselves to be careful about constructing the bests in opinion, could be fake or biased answer, because of: (1) - the impact of global culture & confusion through multi-media, specially among younger groups (have more flexibility), (2) - the impact of the geopolitical events that pushes the some groups to be what they supposed to be, as their self-identification and personalization-show, not who they practically are (inferiority).
What about thinking? Do we identify with a particular outlook and extrapulate ideas from those outlooks?
All too often, we do. This underlines the importance of colleges and universities giving all students a certain level of basic training in logical reasoning and critical thinking.

Heh heh. I often end up thinking that "the other guy" is just mouthing off formulaic platitudes that make no sense, only because he has sworn allegiance to that particular group or ideology. When I hear anyone arguing in a way that I find 100% predictable, and this happens a lot these days, that's one way of comfortably dismissing anything the opposition says. You, know, it's just mindless blather. He's merely reciting a formula, with brain strictly in neutral.
So this is another way of saying, I too feel that people often take tribal positions. But is that a good way to think? Or is it a lazy way of dismissing what we disagree with?
I undertook at the begining of the 1970's two network surveys in order to capture occupational, friendly networks and memberships in various organizations and groups. The results of such surveys were very interesting in showing the importance of these networks for many demographic, social, etc., activities. This permitted also to construct 'sociability' groups distinguished by social and demographic chatacteristics. The paradigm I'm evoking here is that all ideas are party to social alliances, and as such their influence is contingent upon the strength and influence of those alliances.
