I am modeling a slope with discontinuities in UDEC.
According to UDEC manual, the vertical stresses are usually equal to gρz. However, when I assign the insitu stress by this way, some joints will slip or separate when the model is brought to an equilibrated state.
I am wondering if researchers could suggest me about this case.

Hi, the tensions initialization is always a problem. You can create a fish with vertical tension according to the depth, but in the slope problems there are the rotation of the tensor at some point, and then you cannot directly generate a correct initial tension state.
You need to start with elastic materials on the body (coh=1e9, tens=1e9) and also the joint properties must have high properties on cohesion and tension.
After running in the "elastic" condition (don't forget to define also the other two component of the tension (s horiz=ko * s vertical), both and after running, changing the properties of soils/rocks and the joints

I think it is happening in your model because of disproportionate horizontal and vertical stress components. Try to use (sigma v)/3)
