A more simple approach may be to define an anisotropic plasticity material model, based on Hill yield criterion (Abaqus manual section 23.2.6) I would recommend reading the manual but simply put, you can define plastic behaviour in 3 mutually perpendicular directions. This may be useful depending on the results you require.
