As far as I know, from the papers until now I have read, all they are telling me the stories about accidental dispersal, and it has been repeated many times. To me migration means, the organism is doing this for its survival. All these facts given by the papers state same, that the insects make such an effort trying to spread in the new territories, they don't reproduce or overwinter, which ends with their annihilation from new habitats; thus they can't give offspring, which will prove their behavior. Information about seasonal migration over seas and oceans I could not find (when insects returns back to its original habitat), therefore all stories look as speculation.
I think there is migration in Insects, at least in Monarch Butterfly Danaus plexippus (Linnaeus, 1758) from North to Central America. For this species, the movement from one region to the other is necessary for overwintering and mating.
Also the locust Schistocerca gregaria Forsskål, 1775 is thought to migrate among some African regions. In this case I'm not sure if is true migration or swarm movement after outbreak.
Good to hear from you Filippo. That migration is well-known for me. I mean migration over the ocean or seas, which means non-stop flights. Known among leaf hoppers, aphids and dragonflies. They look more accidental dispersal then well organised migration like in Monarch Butterfly.
