Can something explain, in simple and plain words, the following statement:

Family decision-making is now more equitable but the division of work is not. By the end of the 20th century the family had become considerably more complex than in 1950 as the consequences of increased rates of illegitimacy, divorce and unmarried co-habitation were worked out.
