I have found no clinical trials about the effectiveness of analgesic drugs (e.g. ibuprofen or acetaminophen) against infantile colics. Are you aware of such studies? And - if never performed - why has no similar study ever been done?
I think that the term "infantile colic" is too vague since its range varies from gas colic to renal one until the symptoms sustained by congenital malformations. In the first case, actual address in mainly directed to probiotics, in the last two cases many analgesic drugs have been used as shown by current literature. I attach a paper which analyzes the use of drugs in children with the hope that it can stimulate a useful discussion.
I agree: when I write "infantile colics" I mean "unexplained infantile crying". I know that some treaments such as probiotics of oral sugar have been proposed. But I wonder why analgesic drugs have never been attempted. It is difficult that ethical committees would not agree and deny their permission.
@Carlo, I think you are optimistic about ethical committees activity. I suggest you to design a clinical trial and submit it to the ethical committee of your Hospital. I am curious to know the timing, the objections and the final result. My experience does not encourage this attempt, but I should be happy to be denied.
