Even if the possible answers may not be simple, This 'll surely help to promote education, as the root to a society that needs stronger healthier values, such as wisdom, ethics and above all love and understanding for other humans, independently from their inequalities, in views and beliefs, independently from their vices and errors or faults. I think the statement is average elevation not only for the person who acquires knowledge but mostly it is to pass on to all people. for me the instruction is to know in order to pass. The instruction is to me the path of humility, generosity and sharing. It is in itself the essence of political wisdom and not the instrument of politicking.

It is not easy to define it, such views differ if you are speaking about person who lived in 20 th century, who will live in mid 21 st century..., formal educations change, technology has big impact on education...! Critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, new skills..., everything matters!

@ Kamal, At the university your work at is it a common practice to include the responsibility of the education the students are receiving? In other words the use of there gained knowledge used for the advances your refer too? I hope so!!!

Thank you for your reply. I however have great doubts that even the greatest of all human beings can love unconditionally. Can you explain further what you mean by that?

To me the closest to unconditional love I have ever experienced is with my dog. I could come home in any mood, bad day and angry and yell at him ignore him but he would just sit their and wage his tail, give me weird looks, rub up to me until I caved. God I miss BO! Then again I did feed him everyday so is that unconditional love?

I would ask if you would kindly respond to how the university you are with communicate the idea of giving back as a responsibility the students must honor and take seriously. I agree with that should be the case but I do not recall this issue ever being discussed at meeting or taken up in any class I have ever taken.

I agree with you since one answer isn't sufficient. I add that educated person who perceives matter more than provides solutions. A certificate doesn't mean a person is educated.

In my view an educated person should be well mannered and take informed decisions and also s/he should be mature and able to evaluate things in critical ways.

Qualities: Perseverance like a crow (a thirst for knowledge), Aim of a crane (clarity of objective), Alertness of a dog, Equanimity of mind like a hermit, Humility  of a fruit laden tree ( it bends down) and Curiosity of a child.

Duties: Spread of knowledge, Social upliftment and Increase in knowlege

Could you please if time permits to address the question of the university discussing with students the responsibility they have to others and all of humanity. Namely is this issue brought up in classes, do you yourself bring the issue up? Just what are your thoughts on this subject.

@ Ajay, It seems you are stating that an educated person is one who is courteous of others,mature beyond there years, makes decisions based on information which h/she critically evaluates. Sounds like very good advise. Would you agree then that the university needs to bring in manners and cultural awareness/sensitivity as part of its mission? I am inclined to agree but may need a little push if you can provide that?

@ Ankur,  It appears you are stating that an educated person is one who's mind, body, and sole needs are in balance, am I reading your post correctly? I enjoy the references to the animal world as to the qualities one must have to be considered an educated person. I ask are there any more qualities such as the cunning of a cat, the playfulness of an otter, stealth of a leopard, or the X of Y/

Douglas, It is an English rendition of an ancient Sanskrit verse on essentials of education. Ancient Indians used to believe that realm of knowledge is not limited to humans and those who have a lot of knowledge. Knowledge can be obtained through behaviour of seemingly simple things/ beings as well, hence, the learning from all natural things. It might be a little different from the traditional western concept of obtaining knowledge (which isn't true actually, for newton learnt from apple and Benzene ring was discovered trough a snake in dream). 

Dear Douglas, Teaching good manners may or may not be part of an university curriculum because it is essentially taught to children in their primary classes. There may be its extension in different perspective at higher levels.

I feel role modelling may play a great role in teaching 'good behaviour' in higher education...

Yes, we should try to be a role model for our children both in our homes and schools/colleges.

@ Ajay, I believe you are right in the behavior of an educated person. I also would add how one carries one's self, namely head held high, looking and acknowledging people as they pass by ect. I also believe it is important for the educated person to realize the importance of saying hello, smiling, and being of good cheer. I say this because we should know how hard it is out there and a little good cheer goes a long way when people are having a bad day.

@ Ankur, Thank you for explaining the use of animals and the philosophy behind such knowledge's.  There is much the same concepts here in the west with the native American peoples who do believe in knowledge's outside of the human realm. In fact many also believe in the inherent knowledge of the animal that is killed they, out of respect, and wish to gain the power of the animal must eat a part of the heart right after to kill. In this manor the knowledge is believed to pass from animal to human. 

@ Carmin, By stating "knows one's place in society" may you please, if you have the time, to expand on what is meant? I am unclear as to the meaning. I agree that what ever gift one has it is one's duty to society and humanity to give that gift freely and as close as possible in a unconditional way.

@ Krishnan,I agree whole wholefheartedly that an educated person must never take things for granted and deeply care for others. It is one's duty I would claim. I am also having trouble understanding the meaning of "things around them is educated". Could you if time permits please clarify the meaning behind the phrase. I want to be sure I understand.

Thank you so much for your input! I to think of a well educated person as a renaissance m/woman. I think the whole idea of both Ajay and Ankur were posting and Subhash and Krisnan mentioned as well as Maria, Kamal, Sana, and Ljubomir were mentioning is what I think of as a well rounded educated person. It is an oddity that what I would contend the world needs is exactly what our "educational systems" deny.

I was referring to the fact that when one is convinced of what s/he is capable of doing and performs it to make others grow and develop it would help to ameliorate a globalized village: the world. Luckily enough we have technology which could also be of great benefit in the process of helping others, starting off from the family, the village, country and more.

Without technology I would not be able to contact so many people from whom I must say, I am learning a lot besides sharing my ideas.  Therefore I am learning and teaching at the same time and for me that is all part of Education which helps a person to grow and develop to reach an Ultimate Goal.
