I had a professor in grad school who had won a Nobel Prize. The first day of class he said that graduate school was a place to find problems to work on and friends to work with. I was good at the first part and terrible at the second part, and compared to my classmates, I could have accomplished a lot more if I had found those friends.
In most of the published articles, I am the only author or the first author. In all those articles, I wrote the articles at first and showed them to my co -authors afterwards.
The application researches, based on my own basic investigations, I carry out mainly with my followers ( PhD students), they write them with me as second author and they as first authors. The basic researches done by me helped by my students are writen by myself or together with my students as seconds. There are basic works made by my students; in that they cases they are first authors and me second. Everything depends on the grade of participation of every one one. In general, it is always good to work in team, because helpers in all the cases introduce they contributions and they have to be reflected in the publications. That becomes extensive also to the awards and recognitions.
In my opnion, writing is an art, so it depends a lot upon the the particular person. With the same data, writing can be done in different ways. So, I prefer to write alone.
thanks for the question. I prefer to write alone but I do not mind writing with others. I am too selective in terms of having a coauthor because doing research is very demanding work and I do not have time to waste it in misunderstanding. my advice is choose a colleague that you can work with and will add value to your research or work alone.
I think that teamwork can be more profitable because the experimental results of the investigations can be discussed in greater depth. However, for the writing of articles I prefer to do it alone because it can focus better and write the ideas more clearly. After finishing the article then you can take into account the criteria of others
It is preferred to work with other researchers since one researcher doesn't have all research writing skills at the same level of efficiency. Some researchers are professional in programming, and they know how to write results and discussion section accurately. Others are qualified for a high quality theoretical writing (literature review). While some with a strong mathematical background, can write the mathematical modelling part perfectly.
Usually a coordinated teamwork executes better functions. Therefore, I prefer to work in a team provided that its member are good, and a harmony exists between the members. Otherwise, the team is valueless.
Thanks dear colleagues for the valuable comments. Personally, I do prefer to work alone. However, I find working with others can be fruitful if they share the same enthusiasm to complete a certain work together. Two heads are better than one.
It does not matter much what are my preferences in this respect, because as a researcher I have to consider A. what is published more quickly, and B. what is cited more. For both considerations it is better to work in collaboration rather than alone.
In certain fields like mathematics, you can work alone. In many cases you are to work jointly. For example, your research work involves a lot of statistics, and you are not that much expert in that. In this case if you work along with a statistician, you job will be easy, it will take less time, and the output may be far better.
First of all I appreciate your keen desire to learn and know about others interest in the field of research activities. However the general tendency of the human beings to exhibit once own identity through their knowledge, skill and talent to others.
Especially, In the filed of research every researcher doing their research work in their own way, they never compromise any one. I am also accept the same thoughts.
Finally, in my observation without others help no one researcher can succeed their research, so with the help and support of others we can solve many problem and find better solutions. So, better to work out the problem jointly together for the grand success the effort taken.
In terms of academic research writing, do you prefer to work alone or with others? Why?
Generally I prefer to work & write alone as I can oversee the research end to end & be able to plan & control the time & my own effort etc.
However, I'd worked & can work with others in a team to complete the research paper. My personal experience is that working in a team for a research can face many challenges e.g. different understanding levels among team members, many ideas, many disagreements etc. during the storming stage of team formation. But once this is overcome, can see trust & productivity level increases tremendously.
There is research on this topic. I read an article last month in the Academy of Management Learning & Education journal, "Coauthorship Trends in the Field of Management: Facts and Perceptions" by Liu, Olivola and Kovacs, 2017 (Vol. 18, No. 4) pp. 509-530. The paper states that the average number of authors on papers published has steadily increased in the past 40 years. The advantages and possible disadvantages are discussed. The expanding stock of knowledge, increasing specialization, intellectual diversity as well as advancements in communicaiton technology for research collaboration might be reasons for increasing coauthorship. I wrote most of my articles, papers and books alone for many years. But the past decade or so I've found that coauthoring often brings a certain synergy in thinking as well as extra motivation to complete projects through the writing and publishing process.
