In Computational Electromagnetics, what exactly is an open region problem and guided-wave problem?

I've done research on the internet, but I still can't get a "feel" for the vocabulary. Please describe in intuitive and colorful detail.

In guided wave problems, the electromagnetic waves are confined inside the waveguide. They are not radiating away from the device. In an open region problem, like with an antenna, there is wave propagating away from the device. This has to be handled accurately at the boundaries to prevent artificial reflections.
