Removing kaolinite from bauxite using flotation method will depend on the liberation of bauxite grains from silica grains. It becomes a problem when the particle size grains are less than 0.075 mm as further grinding is not possible.
The beneficiation of kaolin which is won in a pit-moist state seldom ready for producing an intermediate or even final product is accomplished either by a wet or a dry process (Carr and Herz, 1989). Some kaolin used for paper coatings for example is wet processed. Leaching is a common treatment used to remove the iron coloration, and delamination to reduce coarse stacks of kaolin to thin plates. As to its processing, kaolin poses some problems owing to the minute particle size that needs, in places, high-field strength magnetic separators to separate the ore from the gangue. The capability of flotation as a common technique in mineral processing to separate the raw material from its impurities diminishes along with the grain size getting smaller and smaller (Yoon and Shi, 1986; Murray et al., 1993). Heavy minerals can be separated by spiral contractors(Woollacott and Eric, 1994).
