In a multijunction solar cell, instead of sending the light from the top, if we illuminate from the sides will it work the same ?
No. The whole point is that each cell only absorbs the light it can convert, and the rest of the light is transmitted to the next cell (or junction). If you illuminate from the side, then unless you have severe elastic scattering in the cells the light that a cell transmits will just exit the cell on the other side without being incident on any other cell.

In this article solar arrays are placed vertically and light is coupled through an holographic grating .... Actually my structure is somewhat like that .. could you please comment on that ...

Hi Waseem, right so when you said multijunction cell I assumed you meant a monolithic stack of junctions. What is described in the paper is several, separate solar cells and some rather complex optics, a concept I know as "spectral splitting" but which I guess could also be thought of as a multijunction approach.
Spectral splitting has the advantage that the light for each cell is separated by dedicated optics (rather than the other cells acting as filters) so there is likely to be less parasitic absorption of light, and fewer resistive losses in the circuit. On the other hand, some losses will arise due to non-perfect optics.

I read your article on vertical multijunction solar cell (MJSC)... I must say that its quite intriguing and I really like your idea that how any one could resolve the current matching problem in MJSC, when you are using only single electrical contacts (top and bottom).
Question: Once you connected an individual connection for each subcell , so its means that it exhibit different power but if you want to calculate the efficiency of entire solar cell. what you will do ?
is it like you will add the short circuit and open circuit current from each subcell and calculate the efficiency or is it something else ...
could you please comment on that .
