What exactly is block 2 doing to block 1 in the second model? I was under the impression that block 1 was independent of block 2, but that appears not to be the case.
Check for the missing data (e.g. number of observations in each block). I think that in one of the variables you use in block 2 there is a missing value. If this is the case, SPSS will delete it already estimating the first block since in hierarchical regressions, the blocks have to be estimated on the same data.
Thank you, Danilo! I believe this is the correct answer. I re-ran the regression using pairwise exclusion vs. listwise and got results that were much closer to what I expected. I appreciate your taking the time to answer this question!
