During blasting specific hole design is used and this determines the distribution of the explosive energy at detonation. the burden is the technical name given to the distance between the hole role and the nearest free face.
What is your own opinion on using burden distance as the best controllable parameter to improve blast fragmentation?
Burden distance is an important parameter in blast design. It defines the weight barrier standing against the explosive wave energy released during detonation. The burden distance function in the perfection of tensile slabbing during the release of the shock energy. large burden results in boulder formation due to incomplete fracturing before the release of explosion pressure (gas energy). The burden distance also defines the distance to be traveled by the shock energy before reaching a change of phase for wave reflection. The change in phase (from solid to gas) depends on the nearest free face which defines the burden movement during blasting.
yes it always good to optimise the blast by varying the geometry parameters but let us also remember that most ejection in blasting comes as a result of low spacing to burden ratio as during initiation the energy will look least resistance route to go. so if you have long burden distance and shorter stemming height ejection and boulders will definitely be a problem for you.@Blessing

Long burden tends to create Barrier against explosion pressure resulting into ejection of energy through the stemming if poor resistant is available due to short stemming length. It also depends on the material use for stemming and the degree of compaction.
