If the date of last modification is sufficient you can use the macro function File.dateLastModified or File.lastModified. See http://rsbweb.nih.gov/ij/macros/FileDemo.txt for an example. As far as I know, there is no function to get the date of creation (has to do with java)

There is a function (File.dateLastModified(path)) that you can use in a macro and will return the date and time the specified file was last modified, I think this could work but the issue is that if you modify the file then the original time at which your image was taken will not be taken into account by ImageJ.

I have not found another solution, and I fear that without using metadata when capturing your file, you won't be able to get this information just from the date and time stamp of the file, but I might be wrong.

As I guess that you are capturing your image automatically, can you not capture a time stamp on the image itself when capturing it either via the software you use or the camera (some camera can "print" the time stamp directly on the image when taking it).

Update: I did try the macros, but Wolfram, you are right, it takes only the last modification date and since I did the transfer of the data from the camera to the computer on different days of their creation, it does not help me =(

But I am going to download the free software from the link of Herve (I have to do it at home, since I have no admin rights in the lab!) and see if I can "stamp" the pictures.

I nearly forgot that there's the exec function for ImageJ macros. For windows the following line gives the creation date (+ some other output of the dir command):

print(exec("cmd /c dir c:\\example\\image1.tif /T:C"));

Hi, another easy way is to use Irfanview. 

------------------------------------------------------------------

1.  Open your photo/a folder.

     Edit -> Insert Text...

Then you can directly make a setting (fig. 1) and have a preview on your photo.  In my case, it shows the exif date.

2.  For the folder editing, then you can click:    File -> Batch Conversion    (fig. 2)

Then click: "Start Batch" .

Works done. Simple and fast.
