You may be interested in my article on gendered collecting practices among missionaries in West China, c.1920-50 ("The Paradox of Gender" available on my publications page). Although it deals with a different geographic region, it incorporates theoretical perspectives on the differences among gendered frames of reference for classifying "art," "science" and "domestic" heritage items in relation to emerging and alternative modernities. From what little I know of Latin American art at that time, I would be very surprised if gender did not have an impact on modernity in art.
I recommend "Farewell to Surrealism: The Dyn Circle in Mexico" by Annette Leddy and Donna Conwell.
Check Mary Ellen Solt, Anthology of Concrete Poetry which contains the Manifesto of Brazilian Concrete Poetry and the pilot plan of 1952. It is the most comprehensive collection of visual poems, especially those of Decio Pignatari, all in the path started by the Modern Art Week of 1922 in São Paulo, by Mario de Andrade and Anita Malfati. This way, you will have a panorama of visual arts and modernity; actually , a door to post-modern movements in Latin Amarican visual arts.

Excellent the bibliography provided by prof Silvia Pinna. I would recommend the Manifesto of Modern Art, by Oswald de Andrade, and Concrete Poetry, edited by Mary Ellen Solt with a great introduction of Brazilian concrete poetry and serial music, along with the Manifesto of Concrete Poetry written the Haroldo de Campos, Augusto de Campos and Decio Pignatari.
