I agree with your observation that scientific innovation provides much peace and pleasure compared to power of politics or money.
But if given an option to choose between Registrar of a university/institution or researcher, First I will take the post of registrar. Because being a researcher I have faced lot of problems from the administration and believe that the administration need to be reformed from time to time to help the researchers give their best. But I don't want to continue as a registrar throughout my life, because I love the academic life. So after doing whatever I can as a registrar, I will resign and continue my research. The quality of a researcher will not fade if he take an administrative post. It is shaped and chiseled to perfection through years of dedication, patience, and experience.
I will choose the option to be a researcher. The pleasure of creative and innovative works is much more important to me than any other benefits. Even the most powerful jobs other than teaching and doing research can not satisfy me.

I agree with VS Muralidharan that Registrar post is purely Bureaucratic and VC's purely Political in India. A Researcher must avoid both but I go with Arun Babu that if suitable persons are not appointed to these posts, they can make the life of a Researcher hell.
Hanno Krieger: I understand why Abhijit is asking this question? In Indian education system, Registrar and VC have more Powers to run the University affairs. In my own University, some Professors opted for Registrar's post to capture position of power but when it comes to VC/Rector/President position in University, most of Senior Professors run after politicians to gain it. I also tried but failed. In the long run, I consider myself lucky that I failed to get VC-ship and continued my research activity which gives me full satisfaction and realization of my dreams. Let me say, Indian professors/researchers are CRAZY for getting positions of Power: Directors of Research; VC/Registrar positions to play game of power politics! These positions carry perks like higher salaries; chauffer driven cars; free housing and many more hidden benefits which are denied to Professors/researchers. If these powers and perks are removed, no researcher/Professor will run after these positions, as is the case in US Universities.
Sorry, if I'm mistaken. They say, the grass is always greener on the other side of fence. But sometimes we should change something in our life, especially if it brings benefits to family, friends, other people and doesn't contradict to own values and convictions.
Irina: I agree what U suggest. Why I wanted to be VC (President) of University as I had 37 years Teaching and Research Experience in India with my training in Best of European universities but this post is under the control of Politicians of state. Mostly, Merit is ignored and they prefer some of their own kith and kin. Prof. Sami Mahmood (Physics) knows all about me, if U are in Jordan University?
The post of researcher, no hesitation. At the end of each day I would have learned something new that I could apply. As a Registrar, nothing new to say, maybe a disagreement with a committee member?
Dear VS Muralidharan: During 1993, the VC post bid was 50 Lacs in Punjab. I was contacted by an agent of CM to arrange this sum; this message went to some other aspirants. I refused to oblige but learnt that highest bidder was appointed. Even UGC bosses know the state of affairs in State Universities.
Prof. Muralidharan: I never thought that this bidding for posts is in practice in CSIR National Labs.? I guess U are working in Kraikudi, in TN. Your RG score is almost at the Top in India, except our topmost Scientist, CNR Rao, with 1600 Publications to his credit!
As Subhash C. Kundu I will not accept any post which is less than a professor or a researcher, because the understanding of the world is connected with with need for knowledge .
Helena: I agree with ur Choice. In Western world, Professor & Researcher command higher respect than Registrar or even VC/President of University. But in India, some Professors are interested in admin. posts with lot of power and clout in society.
