If we have an unknown cell, for basic studies on its properties, we need to detect the combination of channels on the cell.except voltage clamp method,how we can do that?
for example If we have a new and unknown disease,we need to detect the combination of channels on the cell for Eliminating the disease agent.

Unfortunately, voltage clamp method could thus far be direct and important to study any combination of “ion channels”, particularly voltage-gated ion channels, it you plan to study an unknown cell.
Hi Faezah, I would argue that you can only use Hodgkin and Huxley studies once you know the different conductances in your cell and you have assessed their voltage and time dependence (then you can model them with these HH studies). Prior to that you need voltage clamp as emphasised above by Shen-Nan Wu (to get rid of the capacitative current), but appart from that you would need pharmacological agents to block all other individual currents, or ion substitution, leak subtraction, etc. Knock out/ knock in studies in transgenic animals could also help. It very much depends on the focus of your study.

I think maybe I don't ask my question in a right way ,actually i want know how we can study ion channel? I searching for new method to study ion channel (structure ,number,type and etc) that is possible to do simply.
I found some solution like current clamp, X-Ray Crystallization ,flowcytometry, antibody and etc but I can't realize the way that we can use this method for study ion channel and structure of membrane.
