AASHTO (2001) talks about a value of 4.5 m/sec2 as it was observed that most of the drivers decelerate at a rate greater than 4.5 m/sec2 when decelerating for an unexpected condition.This value may or may not be applicable for Indian Traffic condition which is highly heterogeneous in nature. This situation is characterized by different vehicle categories with diverse static and dynamic characteristics, changing composition, lack of lane discipline. Does it mean that I need to use different DR values for different category of vehicles under different traffic facility? I could not get hold of accident reconstruction specialist who could have helped me in this regard. Kindly advise.

Thanks for your reply. The paper led me to several useful references. All of these studies are based on car predominant traffic condition. If I want to use acceleration/deceleration values in case of emergency or non-emergency vehicles particularly for two-wheelers, three-wheelers, what values should I adopt?
I am not sure whether I will answer your question... but regarding safety assessment of evasive manoeuvres, there are many indicators, not only acceleration/deceleration. There is a whole field related to this research. try read the paper related to naturalistic driving studies (100 car studies) and euro-FOT projects they are really useful, I am working on Harsh braking incidents, and the rate of deceleration is different from one study to another, and it depends on the type of vehicle (passenger car, or heavy vehicles) for instance Naturalistic Truck Driving Study (NTD) uses a trigger of 1.96 m/sec^2 as a harsh braking incident but their trucks were instrumented by videos so they will check if this braking considered as incident or removed. for my study which is also about trucks a deceleration in speed by 8 to 16 km/hr in one second which is corresponds to 2.22 for light trucks to 4.44 m/s^2 for heavy trucks was considered harsh braking. hope these information is helpful. I will try to send you useful paper regarding this area.
