The LC50 unlike the LD50 is dependent on a time frame like over 48 hours or 72 hours of cell culture. It is also limited by cell line, culture conditions, media and other factors. But scientists do use these two terms interchangeably, but for cell cultures LC50 is the right term and for animals or humans LD50 is the right dose.
Now based on what you are using in the experiment (cell cultures/animals) you may use the terms..
as Soumya already mentioned, LD50- and LC50-values are more or less interchangable. The main difference is the mode of exposure: the test organisms are exposed with the whole surface of their body to the concentration of the test substance in a medium (e.g. fish in water, earthworms in soil) or are exposed to a defined dose of test substance in food (e.g. test substance mixed in food or water). Therefore, cell cultures LC50s are appropriate, for oral and coontact tests with rats LD50s.
Softwares often do not distinguish between these two exposure options but sometimes you can adjust in the Option tool of a Software.
Let us view LD as the (dose) quantity and LC as the concentration. with 0.5 % concentration one may apply 0.5ml or 1.0ml or 1.5ml. Both may be interchangeable but gives difference in result.
