I am in my early stages in my research where i wish to come up with algorithms, techniques and models for efficient energy management in the cloud environments.
Are you talking about enterprise clouds, mobile edge clouds, IaaS clouds or any specifics or just general ? The social impact of energy utilization for each would be different. Let me know. I will give an answer accordingly.
I will be looking at IaaS and enterprise clouds. What is the social impact other that reduced carbon footprint? You may also direct me to some papers, which will assist me take off.
Social impacts Other than carbon footprint, are in education and a developing nation with entrepreneurial mindset.
Education:
For small, medium and upcoming schools, universities, and community colleges either there are no infrastructure available initially or it is too expensive or wasteful to procure such a massive infrastructure if such a need is seldom, is for learning purposes that are not going to provide guaranteed economic returns. Cloud computing is a very important low cost entry to education market for many small, medium and upcoming educational institutions, due to the pay as you use pricing framework, and delegation of resource and computing tasks to remote cloud data centers.
Hence if today, I want to open a community college/school, if need not worry about buying strong supercomputers, databases, servers, and physical support staff for them, for my computing, record keeping and other cyber-dependent tasks etc. I can just delegate them to the cloud, which provide results back to cheap thin clients at your college.
Thus there is reduced investment, hence I can charge my students less for their fees, if I want to keep my profits constant. Students can get computer science education at a cheaper cost. During vacations, nothing is used, so no pay is required, during end semester you can have more traffic and then you more as you use. As you could see there is a tremendous benefit for students, colleges and university administration.
Cloud Computing is a very low cost entry to accessing large scale infrastructure for imparting effective computer science education and experiments that need to test big data, massive parallel algorithms etc. The students could also benefit by lesser fees, because of reduced investment and maintenance of in house cyber infrastructure

Developing nation with entrepreneurial mindset
In developing nations, usually venture capital is limited and it is difficult to start and sustain a business due lack of funds, space, and safe environment. If your company infrastructure is on the cloud, you run an online business company without a physical office space where all your application runs on the third party IaaS clouds. This would work for small, medium upcoming online businesses to set up their business easily and at a low cost
