I have recently used the D2phaser (Xrd machine) to analyze my data. I have no idea about mineralogical/compound signature of the peaks, what should be my starting point to access the mineralogy from peak data?

A good starting point would be to plot the curves in a graphing program such as excel, origin pro, etc. One must have a slight idea about the composition and mineralogy. The next step would be to compare your graphs with those from mineralogical data bases, such as:

The positions of the peaks in a powder pattern are determined by the size, shape, and symmetry of the unit cell and the peak intensities are determined by the arrangement of atoms within the cell, the powder pattern is a characteristic “fingerprint” of a phase. The powder pattern is searched against the Powder Diffraction File, a database containing the patterns of > 700,000 pure compounds, produced by the International Centre for Diffraction Data (www.icdd.com).
