I am not sure how thick my graphene is, but the hBN is a single layer. I think that the transfer process wasn't so 'good'. Nevertheless, hBN covers the graphene flakes. Now I need to confirm that its graphene flakes that are beneath hBN using AFM. Is this possible?
Routine AFM may not be a good idea... you can try conductive AFM
I think you can record HRTEM, probably there you can see small differences and from Raman spectroscopy you can confirm the presence of graphene as well.
With Raman line shapes of graphene itself you can confirm the presence of graphene covered with single layer hBN.....
Thank you for the replies, but the thing is, I cannot use Raman at the moment. And I also have another sample whose layer numbers are difficult to characterize by Raman. Can't use HRTEM either...I'm an undergrad student. Any hopes with AFM?
If you can do the conducting AFM or STM (high resolution scannig tunneling microscopy), It can be detectable......
its pretty hard to differentiate between hBN and graphene by either Raman or HRTEM if they are mono-layer and defect free. Ofcourse HRTEM with either EELS & elemental mapping can differentiate. The only difference between these two 2D materials is conductivity. So conductive AFM or even Kelvin probe microscopy will be helpful.
Other option is FTIR mapping..
