Absolutely not.  Phenomenology, in my review of various models, is about individual human experiencing of some phenomenon.  Many qualitative methods are not singularly about individual human experience but relationships, process, etc. For me grounded theory and ethnography are clear examples.  Discourse analysis, conversational analysis are far from phenomenological. I agree. There has to be a structure for carrying out qualitative research, and that structure is the phenomenology undergirding the research.

This is an interesting thought. As someone who has conducted phenomenology, a major aspect of it is the historical and practical basis you are following - such as a heuristic or transcendental phenomenological protocol. These historical approaches go back to such philosophers as Husserl, a German philosopher in the 1800s. For transcendental phenomenology there can also be a very prescribed protocol (if you follow such people as Moustakas for instance), which I detail in my dissertation research (feel free to have a look at the attached). Hope this helps to clarify a bit more.

@David, I've asked this question keeping in view the inclusiveness (or call it slipperiness) of the term 'phenomenon'. If we understand phenomenon as "the object of a person's perception" then ethnography sounds like the study of some perception in a cultural setting, narrative would be the perception of some particular individual(s), case-study would be giving an organisational context to perception(s). Nonetheless, I absolutely acknowledge the worth and distinctiveness of all these research designs.

I do not agree, a phenomena is not a particular issue, so it is not a science, I am in favor of whenever possible to propose that the phenomena be studied and researcher always with advance independent of the method to be used.

Not at all. Different methods in Qualitative research has its own orientation and purpose. The intent of case study research and grounded theory approach or ethnography is entirely different. Mere employment of a specific technique/method of collecting information necessarily not make all into the same category. All of the methods in qualitative research conducted with unique underpinnings and context.

I agree with Sajid's thesis. In my humble opinion, the influence of phenomenological sociology (Schutz) on the development of qualitative research methods (at least in sociology) is obvious (Keyword: criticism on behaviorism). In some empirical approaches this influence is part of the methodological reflecion, in others it stays rather implicit. But interpretive sociology ('verstehende' Soziologie and qualitative research methods) is always phenomenological, otherwise - I guess - it's not 'completely' interpretive/qualitative.

I agree with many of the experts who say qualitative research is not phenomenological always. Qualitative research can also be ethnographic and based on discourse analysis. It depends on kind of research problem in hand and objectives of research.

Of course I disagree. What about anthropological studies, case studies, grounded theories etc.
