currently i am last year degree students in psychology. and my topics so far for my master is this: : Reading in Higher Education - Psychosocial Challenges Faced by Malaysian Students
Not an answer but a clarifying question. Is the subject that you want to study “reading in higher education”? And is “psychosocial challenges faced by Malaysian students” a further specification? Or, is the name of your University department called “Reading in higher education”.
your title for the research project is a bit ambiguous and can be read in two ways.
Lilian Hupkens my study is about investigating the pscyo-social challenges for reading among university students. i want to do something similar to one of my article: 10.20448/jeelr.v11i3.5828
but instead of self-directed learning i want to focus on the issue of reading
Greetings. On the top of all writing things is “what you want to explore and the exploration will bring you enjoyness to explore”. Then start your journey of the exploration with all the W’s (what, who, where, etc), how, and etc. All the Best…
First of all, data senang dapat tak? Itu yg paling penting. Quantitative or qualitative or mixed? On the top of it, kenapa “reading”? Apa signifikasi pada negara/institusi/masyarakat? All the Best.
Lilian Hupkens my concern is with students. i wanted to explore why students does not read. the factors that makes them not reading. such as boredom, technology and so on. and in fact, my supervisor told this topic is too specifec and i had to change my topic from the psycho-social barriers for reading to psycho-social barriers for students learning and development.
Mohd Nizam Abdul Aziz I am choosing topic that i am personally invested in. because i have been undergraduate students for 7 years. i studied engineering then i quiet and now i study psychology. and since i spend my whole life in library. i believe that most students does not learn and instead waste most of their time in university. And I believe that this is a big problem. and i want to understand this problem deeply.
so regarding my method, i would use qualitative. because it allows me to go deeper into the issue.
Dear Mr Ahmad, u have to identify what theory is suitable with ur topic. Is it about attitude, then find theory bout it that may suit to ur topic. Strengthen ur problem statement with previous literatures that might give an idea on your problem statement. From the problem statement, crewte 3-4 research question, why u want to do this study and what you want tofind or proo
Ensure, even the study is about attitude, the theory have to in psychology context, because that is your study field. Problem statement - research objectives - research question - research hypothesis - research gap. May strengthen these first. All the Best.
If you have a research subject that is dear to you, it will help you to persevere in a longer research project. To my mind, the supervisor‘s suggestion to study a student’s learning and development is even broader than “just” reading.
(FYI I speak as someone who studied and graduated in engineering 45 years ago and went on to to study psychoanalysis 25 years ago, just finishing a phd now).
You will have to demarcate “reading” more clearly, AND substantiate why reading is important. Do you mean reading paper books as opposed to reading from screens? Do you mean reading about other subjects than study materials, for example literature, poems, magazines. Do you mean reading about life in general besides the narrow constraints of university? Life outside the library? Do you think students need to get a general, well rounded education about society, relationships, politics than just being trained as a professional? I am using my imagination here, brainstorming on my own.
If this is the direction your thoughts about reading take, then you could describe the problem and who has the problem. For example, students use their younger years for professional training only and thus are not equipped for life in general: getting a job, getting bank loans or mortgages for a house, becoming naïve consumers, etcetc. Employers get naïve employees who are not aware of the repercussions or consequences of their work, and so forth.
Then you would have to focus more in order to design a research study. You could measure either students’ attitude to reading more widely, or what they actually read. A literature search will give you more information and let you decide WHAT has NOT been studied yet, i.e. the gap in the literature.
I hope you find this useful. Your subject is very close to the question of what are universities about? Job training or a higher education to create critically thinking adults.
