I need to select a cell type to start my experiment. My experiment is on female genital tract infection and I intend to see cytokine expression. I have read about J774 but I do not know why to use certain cell type. Are there any papers I can read about this? I have access to book "Culture of Animals cells"- R Ian Freshney and it does not say anything about cell selection criteria.

When selecting a cell line is important to make sure that it is a good model for the disease you are studding. Normally we do a literature check to see what cell lines are being used for genital tract infection research.
It is also important to check the specific genetic background of the cell lines to know the organ of origin, differentiation type, mutations, growth rates, and other properties that will make a difference when planning the experiments and interpreting your results. You can check all the cell lines commercially available and its features in ATTC and Cellosaurus.

In your case, it could be interesting to look for the cytokine expression profile in papers or OMICS databases before choosing.

Generally if you want to examine bacterial/viral infection of host cells, use a cell line that originates from the tissue/organ where the infections occur. You have to search the literature to see what people use for the type of infections you want to investigate. If there inst a good physiologically relevant cell line or you cant obtain it, then you can use other cell lines that do not originate from the organ you are studying.
The J774 are macrophages I believe, so the may not represent the epithelial infections that occur in genital tract (if the infections you study also occur in reproductive epithelium)
