I know that molecules can be aligned by a two-color pulse. But for polar molecules without inversion symmetry, the orientation (up versus down) is also important. Can the molecular orientation be controlled and to what degree?
Regarding non zero electric dipole moment of polar molecules, they can be oriented via an applied static electric field. Here is one of the good references:
