We need a chemical treatment for fruit tree saplings to defoliate them and induce dormancy earlier and prepare saplings for packaging and storing , Chemical treatment must be economical and efficient .
You can read this article (from 1982) about using some chemicals to achieve defoliation in apple to prepare apple rootstock, (best results was with Mg(ClO3)2 · H2O) though it doesn’t contain clear information about dormancy but it contains information about winter hardiness.
actually ethephon was used in the previously mentioned article. it gave good results when used in optimal concentrations. but it negatively affected winter resistance.
