I am not sure what you mean when referring to a ‚novel‘ method……..?
A common method to estimate populations (of whatever species) in the field is the so-called capture-recapture method and using the Lincoln-Peterson-method to estimate the size oft he population after two visits, assuming ‚closed‘ environment, though. Sometimes, it is also referred to as the ‚mark-and-recatpure’ method. Find more information here:

However, this is not a ‚novel‘ method, being used in ecology for quite some time. It is also used when counting ticks, e.g. in these papers that you might find helpful for further instrcutions:
