Vibrating wire instruments are installed for health monitoring during dam construction. But, with time, most instruments stop working and are useless. The continuous health monitoring of the dam is very crucial. So, what shall be done in such a case? Is there any code provision that guides us on the installation of new instruments during the operational stage of a dam? Any guidance from dam experts will be highly appreciated. I really appreciate any help you can provide.

I am neither a dam, nor a SHM expert, but I have worked a bit with related problems, eg risk assessment for pipe fatigue and the integrity of various structural elements. So, read what I write with a grain of salt.
One approach is to relate the sensors that still work to vibration translation, as is done for piping. It usually is the rebar that fatigues in concrete and such stress can either be measured or calculated and related to vibration. if you want to continue using SHM, point to point FRFs are useful. These can be measured using external sensors, eg accelerometer and/or scanning laser vibrometer(s). The latest Polytechnic lasers can scan and measure at large distances.

Thanks, Claes Richard Fredö, for your response. My main concern is VW Piezometers, VW Stress meters, VW Strain meters, and VW Temperature meters installed in concrete gravity dams. Do we have any solutions to record their readings once the sensor is out of order?
I doubt that. Gone probably is gone.
