Gnuplot and GraphViz are certainly powerful and complex tools. If you'd like to get a quick start, try yEd. It provides a variety of graph layouts, all accessible via an intuitive GUI. There are a few more powerful tools like conditional node and edge coloring that I found useful in visualizing network topologies before. In the attached file, I coded node age and edge length with colors and size.
