My question is for those who published/publishing a book or editing special journal issues. Generally, the expert persons are invited for such contributions. Frequently, many authors request to extend the submission date. However, at crucial/final stage of submission of article they send you an e-mail stating that they are not able to contribute. Many of my colleagues have came across such situations when some scientists/professors give up at the final stage (sometimes even after extending date of submission).
My query is how to cope up with such non-professional people? Is there anything we can do to tackle such problems? Your suggestions are important?
Agree with Laurent. But there is another side of the coin also. Strange thing I have observed on part of the journals is that for invited articles or editorials, once you submit and the journal sends you acceptance mail, before publication they will start demanding publication fees. Is it ethical to ask for money when the journal has invited the article from an author. The author didn't approach the journal for publication. They will start giving some very silly excuses for that like journal policy etc etc. Rather in the beginning also, it can be informed, in part of the journal that we are inviting you to write an article but you have to pay the fees for this article.... hahaha.
Recently I got a mail from a journal demanding publication fee for an invited article which has been already published one and a half years ago.... How professional is that?

I would suggest not to try to write as if they are not interested in science as science
but finance, they will not read your concerns and used their lobbies to destroy your intellectual qualities.
Just try to use the topic between four eyes and show them how you are aware of their
ignorance and put yourself on top of the top as we need your professionalism.
They used a way of talking which means nothing but impressed a lot. Be prepared
to impress them by showing a lot a ability to play with their high level stupidities.
Good luck as you will soon need to be on the top of the top as what is surrounding us
is the bin.

In case, journals are demanding publication fee for invited articles that is really weird. All such conditions should be disclosed to the invited authors in the beginning..!!!
More importantly, authors should also make this thing very clear before accepting any such invitations, it didn't take much time. :)
To add up to the ridiculousness.... I should say... again I have got reminders from the same journal to submit the publication fee for the invited article.... ...........

These is third time in this new year that they have wished me a happy new year on 7th, 16th and 30th of this month, and their financial year was supposed to end on 28 Dec 2012 as per the first mail on 26/12/12............. hahaha

As you are not paying the author there is no implied contract. Therefore you are relying on the goodwill of the contributor and, if anything like me, are often so busy that with the best will in the world simply can't find the spare time to complete the contribution. I would always make sure the agreed deadline is 6 months before you really need it...
I agree with your views Mark, that the authors did not get paid, but at the same time they are also not paying to publish their work. But still people can simply decline the invitation in the beginning as we all know very well about our incoming schedule. This will be good for both persons. I think so..???
