I suggest you use the HASHIN DAMAGE model available in ABAQUS/CAE to simulate the damage and calculate the geometric parameters of cracks.

Also, you need to findout the Hashin Damage model parameters for the axle material from the previously published experimental studies.

I won't add much to what Anas said except, pay attention to loading/boundary conditions. You acquire material properties from suppliers.
