I have claye soils that I want to use Biolog Ecoplates on. Can I use CaCl2 (1ml of 1M in 100 ml of 10% soil solution) to settle the soil? Or maybe centrifuge (5000 rpm for 1 min)? I do not want to mess up the results. Or should I just stick with subtracting the control from the values as usual?

Thank you Harald. Haven't yet had time to look at the article you sent, but will. Have a look at the results of my little test. Left (against the alphabet on the plate) my soil solution in water; the middle 4 columns soil sentrifuged and on the other side the 1 ml calcium chloride. I've decided to use 0.5 ml 1M calcium chloride per 98.5 ml of water and 10 g of soil. I don't see how I am going to keep it in suspension.
